CNC Theory

While it is not impossible to troubleshoot and repair Computer Numerical Control (CNC) equipment with  a limited knowledge of the basic theory it is far more laborious . The best and most efficient CNC technicians always share at least one characteristic. They have a thorough understanding of  the components that make up the system and how they work together. 

All CNC machine tools consisit of  five basic components. These five are:







Depending on whether it is a vertical machining center, horizontal machining center or turning center most CNC machine tools will incorporate one or more of the following components:
  





There are other more specialized CNC machine tools which generally differ only in the way that they remove material from the workpiece. These machines, listed below, will be discussed apart from the verticals, horizontals and lathes.
